Marshall picks up some of the Zags magic as they get P-Mac as a transfer. P-Mac is short for Pierre Marie Altidor Cespedes (I did not cut/paste folks, I typed it all in!). P-Mac was grandfathered in the now doomed (and deemed free agency rule) that was rescinded. But he petitioned and he was grandfathered in so he will be eligible to play in 2007-2008, his final year of eligibility. As you may have guessed from the name, P-Mac is from Montreal of Canada. New head coach Donnie Jones (former Florida assistant) is stockpiling talent and hopes to take advantages of the vacuum of power at the top of Conference USA behind the Calipari Experiment and the loaded UAB squad.

The hiring of PitinoVille assistant Marvin Menzies at New Mexico State is talked about by Fox Sports and Sportsline and Yahoo Sports and ESPN. Menzies promises to stay at Las Cruces for a long time. The implied assumption is: "long time (unless a better job opens up)".

And now some sad news. Racial slurs were slipped into the offices of the coaching staff at Ball State. This is the 21st century but sadly a lot of people are stuck centuries behind. The racists used recent NCAA violations by the coaching staff as an excuse. It's one thing to complain about a coach having NCAA violations and it's a totally different thing to resort to racial slurs and leaving notes in such a manner. Everybody check your calendars, this is the 21st century!

The NCAA rejects two proposals for drug-testing. They probably know what the results will be and wouldn't like that outcome :-)

The Phog Blog says that the Big 12 is planning to move its conference championship game from Sunday to Saturday, and the final will move to the Sprint Center in KC starting in 2009-2010. The former was probably done in response to the timing of the NCAA selection cmte selections.

A rather interesting NBA draft it was, with Mike Tricco being the point guard, with Stephen A. Smith, Jay Bilas, and Marc Jackson on the wings. Off the bench came Andy Katz, Rick Buecher (sp?), Lisa Salters (sp?), and Paolo San Antonio. I am not sure if Jim Gray counts as a Lakers employee or an ESPN reporter :)

Although it turns out m ost of the cheering was done by a VCU graduate who was a camera man. So much for that Dookies! :-) After reading that story I will be more kind and gentle to Coach K. Nevada extends Mark Fox for three years, through 2014. He has to pay a quarter million dollars if he bolts out before July 2011.

An NCAA food-related violation that does not include Rick Majerus? It involves Colorado. They were apparently undercharging athletes for meals. Oh NCAA, can you please stop nitpicking and start tackling the real problems of college athletics?. But of course it's easier to nitpick on sandwiches, and whether two scoops of ice-cream are an NCAA violation, or a Subway sub with double meat is a violation, rather than dealing with the real issues... This was a "major" violation with a $100,000 fine that will go to feed the homeless. Football lost one scholarship but that's about it.

Basketball championship, then football championship, then basketball championship means only one thing: The AD is getting a big raise. An 11-year deal of up to $1.2 million per year, nearly doubling his previous pay.

The Big Ten Network is going live in August 2007. So far they have agreements to be carried by DirecTV and AT&T nationally and by cable providers in Big 10 cities and states.

ESPN favorite Dave Revsine has been hired to be the studio host

The BTN (Big Ten Network) will carry more than one hundred (100) men's college basketball games next year

If more than one game is taking place at the same time, they will be shown by local cable providers on the "overflow" channels. (eg the least popular tv shopping channel in each cable system)

Some of the games (football and basketball) will be broadcast in High Definition (HD).

They will include coaches shows, and archived games from the past

Sad news however for ESPN Full Court and ESPN Plus viewers: The Big Ten Network games will not be available on ESPN Full Court and ESPN Plus.

Already the network had a war of words with Comcast as Comcast called them "2nd and 3rd tier"

BTN wants their channel to be made available on standard cable for Big Ten cities and states and as generally available as possible nationwide.

The network is in association with Fox Sports.

Here is one idea: Perhaps in areas without BTN availability, Fox may do the smart thing and carry those games on their Fox College Sports channels. (this is only my opinion, but I hope it gets implemented)

Since there are eleven teams in the Big Ten, I now officially rename this channel to BEN (Big Eleven Network).

I'm sure BTN (oops! BEN) would have been ecstatic if Greg Oden stayed for another year. But regardless, Thad Matta is making the Big 10 cool to watch again (well, at least the Ohio State games). Good luck enjoying Tom Izzo and Kelvin Sampson slugfests.

Now, the team commonly referred to as the "Jail Blazers," for their spate of bad behavior in the past decade, is looking for a chance to return to the glory days of 1977 when Coach Jack Ramsay, Bill Walton and Maurice Lucas won the city its first NBA championship. General Manager Kevin Pritchard is preparing to make arguably the most important decision in franchise history, Kevin Durant or Greg Oden? There is concern that history doesn't repeat itself, because in 1984, Portland took Sam Bowie with the number two pick, leaving Michael Jordan behind. Sunday on Outside the Lines, Mark Schwarz reports on the decision surrounding the number pick, and the rekindled spirit of the Portland faithful. Also on the show, NCAA President Myles Brand calls it an expenditure race in college athletics. Thirty-five years ago this weekend, Title IX, the watershed civil rights legislation aimed at gender equity in education and sports, was signed into law. While there's no denying the effect Title IX has had on increased participation for female athletes, the question many have is, at what cost? What was Memphis missing from its last couple of teams? Perhaps a super star? Gary Parrish walks (!) and talks with super frosh Derrick Rose. A three-page story along with a video segment. Rose is one and done talent-wise, but his addition to an already loaded and talented Memphis team could be the difference between a Final Four and another Elite 8. Rose means that Calipari will get even more air time next season (if that's possible). But kidding aside, Derrick Rose will probably be a very efficient and effective player from day one at Memphis. I am officially on the bandwagon, which will probably jinx them ;-)

Reggie Reggie! (The TV Coach is in!)

After flirting the whole spring with potential NBA suitors, Reggie Theus has secured an NBA head coaching job with the Sacramento Kings of the Maloufs and Cowbells. And why not? He is more qualified than a lot of the current NBA coaches. He had a long successful career as an NBA player, he played a coach on TV so he has all the acting and dramatic skills needed to handle media, players, zebras and owners, he managed to revitalize New Mexico State, and he had a stint as an assistant under Rick Pitino.

Georgetown's Jeff Green is staying in the NBA draft (very likely lottery pick), as well as Washington's Spencer Hawes (very likely lottery pick)... 420-friendly JamesOff Curry remains in the NBA draft but without an agent because he thinks he has a promise to be picked at #49 by the Chicago Bulls. Maybe he has had enough of the Suttons scowls (and who can blame him?). If he is undrafted, he can return to Ok State (but hopefully without the Randolph Morris drama)

Returning to college: Surprising many people is that Cal's injured DeVon Hardin is returning to Cal for a chance to become a lottery pick in the 2008 draft. He did not want to be just a top 25 pick this year... Also staying in school is mini-me-iverson, Virginia's sean singletary... Marcellus Kemp returns for his 6th year at Nevada... Dominic James returns (along with everybody else at Marquette), placing a bid for a top 4 finish in the Big (Y)east next year.

Not just NBA mock drafts, but also NBA draft podcasts (three of them so far) can be found at DraftExpress.com. But the Draft Express cannot be contained in a single continent. They are also reporting live from the 2007 Reebok Eurocamp. Other interesting pages there are who signed with an agent, a recap of the early entry list, and a lot more.

The article of most interest from a college basketball perspective with regards to the 2007-2008 season is the list of players who signed with agents, and the ones who are merely testing the waters and expected to pull out before the Monday (yes Monday) deadline.

So who is gone for good because they signed with an agent? Let's recap by class:

Greg Oden, Kevin Durant, Brandan Wright (freshmen)

Julian Wright, Josh Mecha-Roberts de Puke (Josh McRoberts), Rodney Stuckey (if you missed watching him this year, you missed out!), Marcus "moody blues" Williams, Wilson Chandler (should have waited for another year?) (sophomores)

Most of the decisions made so far to sign with agents were of Vulcan nature, which is a welcome surprise because this is a very difficult decision and it's very hard to resist the temptation to go pro. Kudos to all the players, their families, coaches, handlers, NBA advisors, and such for making facilitating these decisions.

On the injury front, 7-footer Jared Carter of Kentucky re-injured his shoulder

In his daily blog teaser Andy Katz says that Kellogg won't be in the NBA draft. Not Clark Kellogg, but former UConn guard Antonio Kellogg, who is now a former San Francisco guard as well as he left the team to go pro. Because of the existing NBA rules he cannot go through the NBA draft and be an NBA free agent, but he can still go pro in the non-NBA controlled leagues, which includes the high-paying European leagues, and just about any country in the world, along with the low-paying leagues in the US (USBL, CBA, etc). So he can still go pro :) Katz also talks about Jaycee Carroll getting ignored by the NBA. Well if your name is JJ Redick and you play for Coach Dirty Rat K, then you are a lottery pick. But if you are the same player but play in a small conferences in a remote region of Utah, well, talent is not enough...

Conference Commissioner Carousel

The Big 12 commissioner Kevin Weiberg has resigned and he is expected to take a position on the upcoming Big Ten TV network which is scheduled to go live in August 2007. The Big Eleven TV network will be operated by FSN/FCS. I do not know what format it will have, whether it will be just like Fox College Sports, or it will have more in-studio presence like ESPNU... If you don't believe me, the story is at Sportsline. Also Dennis Dodd chimes in. Page 2 of Dodd's story provides a list of candidates to replace him at Big 12 commissioner. The Conference Commissioner Carousel is spinning!. Send your resumes now!

As you may recall, the Big 10 conference actually has 11 teams. And the Atlantic 10 has 14 teams, although they really should cut back down to 10 because some of the bottom tier teams of the Atlantic 10 are really at the NEC/MEAC level.

An interesting debate, is Memphis a mid-major?. Speaking of Memphis, they plan a four year series with Georgetown. The first game will be on December 22, 2007 a Saturday, so it could be on ESPN, CBS or ABC or FSN.

Massive Hardwood Heavens Marathon on MojoHD (formerly INHD, a high definition channel). These are documentaries that look at the history and tradition of some of the most historic college basketball arenas in the country. The marathon starts on Saturday June 23 at 4am, and continues until 3pm pacific. I kid you not. Usually ESPN's Brent Musburger narrates. The episodes shown on TV (about 25 minutes long) are highlights of the original documentaries.

The original documentaries are longer and are available on DVD. Some of the Hardwood Heavens DVDs are available at Amazon, including Rupp Arena of Kentucky, Allen Fieldhouse of Kansas, Assembly Hall of Indiana, and the Dean Dome of North Carolina.

Big Brother (the NCAA) revoked the press credentials of a newspaper blogger, because apparently the NCAA considers blogging live from a game a violation of their copyrights. Memo to the NCAA: your whole organization is a violation of student-athletes rights!. Fix that first, before you start chasing bloggers :-)

Speaking of the new Andy Katz, Jeff Goodman at Fox Sports, his latest blog entry talks about Georgia Tech re-clinching Lewis Clinch, the first month on the job for former UCLA Kerry Keating as the new head coach at Santa Clara, who as you may recall pushed out Dick Davey after 30 years of coaching at the university (15 as assistant, 15 as head coach). Goodman also talks about Jordan's best man, and a former Sendek basketball player picked #30 in the draft (no, not the NBA draft, but the MLB draft!)

As you may recall Marshall has a multi-link connection with Billy the Kid (Donovan).

Scheduling update on the 2007-2008 season: CBS wants to move the Louisville vs Kentucky game to January according to A Sea of Blue... This will be a coaching rematch of the Pitino vs Gillispie game of this March at Rupp Arena, where Gillispie's Texas A&M managed to beat Pitino's Louisville despite a 30+ game from Edgar Sosa who had a "Darius Washington" moment at the end of the game.

Sportsline.com has an update on Zabian Dowdell as he prepares for the NBA draft while at the same time trying to recover from the tragedy at Virginia Tech

And he'll want to go back to the Orlando Tragic by Monday ;-) Interestingly his contract is one year longer than his five-year NBA ban :-) ESPN has this story as well, with the Urban Legend getting a salary boost as well at $3.25m per year. And if perhaps Urban Legend wins another national championship then he will leapfrog Donovan salary-wise :-)

Bad Hair Day resurfaces! Andy Katz has the story at ESPN: Quin Snyder to coach in the NBDL!. Yes Quin Snyder folks. I kid you not. This is not an April fools day joke! He will coach the Austin Toros, so at least he will be living in a fun city full of students, artists and such, where no one will be making fun of his hairstyle ;-) Maybe Coach K can schedule Snyder's team for an exhibition game. I'm sure the NCAA will give the Dirty Rat permission ;-)

Florida stands by Billy the Diva according to this AP story. According to that story Donovan's Florida new contract was set at 3.5 million per year for seven years - this right before he took the Orlando Magically Tragic job.

It is official! Billy Donovan is a spotlight-hungry diva! First he flirted with Kentucky by making a big issue about his non-interest interest. Then he flirted with the Memphis/Vancouver Grizzlies, while in the meantime continuing to keep open his contract renegotiation talks with Florida. Then he flirted with the Orlando Tragic (ooops Magic) and accepted their job offer, only to change his mind a couple of days later. What a diva!!!

This may remind some Coach Dirty K's flirting with the LA Lakers. But to K's credit, his Lakers flirting was a staged publicity stunt (it just happened to be 4th of July). It was a blatant attempt by the Dirty Rat to remind everyone at Duke (including the new school president), the ACC and the NCAA how important he is to all of them. This was also a good opportunity for Crappy (oops Kobe) to rebuilt his image by associating himself with Coach Dirty Rat K, and hoping people forgot about his Colorado "clinic incident".

On today's Outside the Lines First Report, Andy Katz and Kelly Naqi had an update on the Billy Donovan two-contract (Orlando and Florida) saga! Also featured as the centerpiece was another diva, Crappy Bryant (ooops Kobe "Dominque Wilkins" Bryant). Looks like LeBron James is the Michael Jordan of this NBA generation and Kobe Bryant is the Dominque Wilkins! (no offense to Dominique Wilkinks)

In the Historical Segment, A Sea of Blue looks at the Top 5 point guards at Kentucky in the last 27 years. One of them is a head coach right now, another broke a certain rebounding record, while another one was a frequent Final Four visitor. I won't reveal them, you have to read the story to find out. And I absolutely agree with their #1 choice, I think that player was under-rated and under-appreciated by the average NCAA fan and the national media.

Also right now on ESPN, on Outside the Lines First Report, in the Centerpiece segment, "Making the jump" talks about Billy Donovan's move to the Orlando Magic, hosted by Jeremy Schaap. The Donovan contract will be five years and $27 million. Reference to Steve Spurrier is made. They look back at other former college coaches trying the NBA hand, like Pitino. Interview with media-savvy John Calipari: "I'm happy he is taking a playoff team". Calipari gives an insight on the day-to-day differences between college and the NBA (dealing with media all the time non-stop)... Next guest is Adrian Wojo (can't spell his last name) of Yahoo Sports: Having Howard will help... He thinks Stan Van Gundy would do better with half the money.

Chris Sheridan says the hiring college coaches to the NBA is cycling back in and thinks Jay Wright and Tom Crean may also be giving a chance in the NBA in the future.

Dick Vitale thinks Anthony Grant will take over Florida... Vitale, a Florida resident, says Florida will survive and continue to thrive, just like they survived Steve Spurrier going to the NFL... Vitale wants to see incoming recruits to become "free agents" after a coach leaves... Nick Calathes will stay for sure... Vitale ends by asking Billy Donovan to "loan me some cash baby!"

Andy Katz said that Anthony Grant is scheduled to meet with Florida AD Foley in the next couple of days at an undisclosed location. Billy Donovan lobbied for Anthony Grant. Katz said that if Grant is hired, the players, the incoming recruits and the remaining assistant coaches will all stay put, including Jai Lucas... Katz also mentioned that Billy Clyde Glide Gillispie is trying to re-recruit Jai Lucas after the change.
