Great new resource: The Vance Walberg Nation

A brand new website has been created as a great basketball resource for coaches and fans of the Vance Walberg AASAA offense. The AASAA offense has created a big stir in college basketball ever since John Calipari of Memphis decided to absorb it. Here is the Vance Walberg Nation. The website has information on upcoming clinics where Coach Vance Walberg of Pepperdine will be discussing his offense. Other great resources on the website: Calipari showing AASAA plays (video), a directory of basketball coaches running the AASAA or a similar offense is being created, and more coming up every day.

Speaking of AASAA, one of these days I am going to try to go through a couple of Memphis games and see what I can reverse engineer - but I'm not trained in this so please don't expect much :)

FIBA Americas Basketball Tournament has just began! (ouch for Andy Rautins)

The FIBA Americas Basketball Tournament has just began! Coverage on NBA-TV, FSN and the ESPN family of networks. Team USA will be featured on the ESPN Family of Networks.

The Panama team features former George Washington wing JR Danilo Pinnock, former Virginia wing Gary Forbes and former Wake Forest and Skip Prosser versatile forward Jamaal Levy. Former Arkansas head coach Nolan Richardson is now coaching Mexico (used to be Panama's head coach). Uruguay features former Majerus disgrantlee Martin Osimani (he transferred to Duquesne). The first game has just gone into overtime, Uruguay just missed a last second tip-in on an out-of-bounds play!

Update: Syracuse guard Andy Rautins playing for his dad for Team Canada just went down with a nasty injury :( NBA-TV analyst (former Dookie) Alaa Abnelnaby said he heard it "pop" and hoped for the best. He left the court and headed to the locker room... Also playing for Team Canada is former Pitt forward Levon Kendall and UConn scorer Denham Brown. Leonardo Barbosa of the Phoenix Suns leads Team Brazil.

Update #2: Team USA was pitching a 9-0 shutout after the first media time-out against Venezuela. Isn't it nice to have Jason Kidd as a coach on the floor point guard and a scoring machine like Kobe? The other bonus of having a coach on the floor is that he overrule Coach K (and that's a good thing!) :)

Featured Story on the AASAA offense: DeCourcy talks how the offense is a recruiting tool for Vance Walberg at Pepperdine. It's not just the waves and the beautiful campus and SoCal anymore. It's all about the AASAA! As we mentioned before, Pepperdine still does not have the right personnel to run this offense as it was designed (expect that to change in 2008-2009). For now, Walberg's biggest recruiting tool is the success of Calipari's AASAA offense. DeCourcy has the history of how Walberg and Calipari met, and how Calipari absorbed the AASAA offense. Featured Story: Jason Whitlock's REAL TALK is back at Fox Sports. This time he covers Imus, Vivian Stringer, and Ronnie Thompson and Ball State. Some interesting stuff: He spent hours in a law office with the three Thompsons (Big John, Georgetown John, and Ball StateRonnie trying to convince him to write a story about the situation. Whitlock did not, but Wilborn (of PTI and Washington Post) wrote it. Whitlock is a Ball State alum and former football player. More revelations by Whitlock: Ronnie was dropping N-bombs (he had an all-black roster), and he randomly told his players "not to trust in (white people)". Whitlock's story is bound to create a big stir!

These will be an exempt tourney, Nov 22-25, with games on ESPN2 and ESPNU. Comcast ADD ESPNU NOW! ESPN, make it happen!

Another coach fired! Florida A&M fires head coach Mike Gillispie, despite taking the team to the NCAA tourney last year. Why was he fired then? Because of an off-the-court situation - he was stalking a former girlfriend (who was obviously not his current wife). His lawyer complains of mishandling of the situation by Florida A&M.

Jerry Meyer of Rivals opens his mailbag and answers questions about Brandon Jennings, UCLA, Ralph Sampson III, Tyreke Evans (down to two schools allegedly), and Abdul Gaddy.

Houses of the ...Coaches

A very interesting story at A Sea of Blue on Billy Gillispie and his houses. One of the funny tidbits mentioned in the story: When Billy G invited his UTEP team to watch the selection sunday show (in early March), they noticed that his Xmas tree was still up. March is after all Christmas for college hoops fans :)

If you missed it, text messaging remains banned with January being another opportunity to change it. Needless to say (at least some)coaches want texting back. But on the plus side, my carrier pigeon business has been picking up! They are not prohibited by the NCAA rules. College coaches, drop me a line! And some good news from the NCAA: They have given Texas Tech center Esmir Rizvic an additional half-season of eligibility.
