According to this story Bill Raftery and Lou Canellis will be the sideline team of the Georgetown coverage on the ESPN family of networks on Friday October 12, 2007.

Friday October 12, on FSN's Best Damned Sports Show Period, a round-table of college basketball coaches featuring Ben Howlin Wolf, Tim Sleepy Floyd, Rick I-coached-Durant Barnes, and Jeff I'm-more-just-a-Dookie Capel. It will air and re-air at various times depending on what games are playing on your local FSNs.

There's also Saturday October 13, 2007 Midnight Madness, with George Mason, Indiana and North Carolina featured on the two hour ESPNU broadcast.

Tape-delayed live-blogging the Conference USA Media Slam

The CSTV broadcast features Steve Lappas as the in-studio basketball analyst. Seth Davis and Pete Gillan are the broadcasters hosting the event from the FedEx-Calipari arena in Elvisville.

Some quick tidbits: New arena for Central Florida, CSTV's editiorial thinks Turnaround Tom's Houston is the likely #2 in the conference. Two new coaches are introduced in the conferences at Marshall (almost Florida head coach Donnie Jones) and East Carolina. In the coaches poll, UAB and Houston tied for the #2 spot.

First up some McCarthy-ism at East Carolina as he enters the season as an interim head coach but with lots of mid-major head coaching experience. They do have a seasoned AD and basketball mind in Terry Holland. The interim coach promised a faster style of play and earlier shots.

Next up, the University of Central Florida with a brand new 10,000 seat arena. This is one of the biggest schools you may not heard about, they have an enrollment of almost 50,000 students in Orlando. Pete Gillan got re-united with his former ACC opponent Mike O'Donnell during the event. UCF has the human interest story of a 30 year old former Marine Stanley Billings and a sixth year student-teacher.

Next up UTEP with Tony Barbee who is going to be running his flava of the Vance Walberg AASAA offense. All-conference Philly guard Stefon Jackson joined the coach. The team has gotten bigger in size thanks to the new incoming players including Manny Cass. UTEP is working on a new multi-million practice facility. There we learn about the Cheetah girls.

Of course everyone is undefeated at the moment, so this is the best part of the season for the coaches. The sky is the limit, zero losses and undefeated, and everyone's rooting for them.

Next up Rice, who will be homeless this season as they are renovating their arena. Willis wants to turn this disadvantage into an advantage. Coach Willis did not bring a player with him, but he was lamenting the loss of Morris Almond et al. He promises a faster pace. Sure, they all do at media days, but when the games count, then they'll do whatever it takes to win, and slugfest wins games.

Next up, a branch from the Izzo tree, Doug Wojcik at Tulsa, hoping to make the John Philips era a distant memory. He even looks more like Izzo this season. He is accompanied by seniors Brent McDade and Rod Earls. The team has an interesting project in 7-footer Jordan. Wojcik took an innocent quasi-cheap shot at the Vaden situation at UAB.

Next up Marshall with Floridian assistant Donnie Jones accompanied by wing Markel Humphrey. Goodbye Ron Jirsa, hello P-Mac! Unfortunately this format does not allow Pete Gillan to freewheel, so we are not getting his famous lines. No donuts, and no zingers. So why is P-Mac eligible to play right away at Marhsall even though he played for the Zags for the whole 2006-2007 season? Because he graduated in three years so he was able to take advantage of the new morphed free agent/graduate student rule. Because he wanted to be a point guard. Oops, I mean because he wanted to join the graduate program at Marshall. Pardon me for that slip :-)

Next up SMU with toxic personality coach Matt Doherty who promises to play faster and attack the defense before they are set. Sure, sure, sure. SMU does have a solid recruiting class and Matt D. reminded everyone of his UNC recruiting prowess. He is accompanied by mature senior Jon Killen. He is hopeful of Papa Dia, comparing him to Pete Gillan's Travis Watson at Virginia. Seth Davis hinted at Matt D's personality jokingly: "Just do as he says and you'll be fine". That's what brought him down at UNC?

Next up, another coach with experience at a big program and with drama behind him, Mike Davis at UAB with what CSTV called "Darth Vaden". He addressed the club incident and Davis installed a lifetime kerfew on his players. He is accompanied by Paul Delaney the 3rd and Robert "Darth" Vaden. Vaden said transfering to UAB with Mike Davis was one of the "easiest decisions of my life". But UAB is not just the high profile transfers, he also brought in some new players this year, including a 7-footer Z-man from Europe and teammate of royalty Keenan Ellis.

Up next, Larry "Party Animal" Eustachy with his clip-on tie and Southern Miss! What beverages did he have before the event? He yelled "Bring it on baby". Okay, just kidding about the beverages :) Scheduling is a toughie he said. He said "best basketball job I had to win games". Well look at your schedule :) Also mentioned is a promising Brazilian forward. Lappas projected that if he has a 25 game season and an NCAA tourney appearance he will be a hot commodity in the coaching carousel. The co-eds would agree?

Turnaround, turnaround, it's time for Turnaround Tom and Karl Malone's cuz Marcus Malone. As usual a wave of new players and seven seniors, Kelvin Lewis of Auburn eligible to play right away because of hardship rules. Will Lanny Smith be ready? TT said "we are more like the Phoenix Suns". Except without Steve Nash, Matrix, and Amari? TT likes having multiple guards who can play the point and run the Phoenix Mike D'Antoni offense. Then TT went on into lecture mode breaking down most of the teams in the conference.

The second to last team, the Tulane Green Wave with former Maryland assistant Dave ickerson and senior power forward Dave Gomez. Finally Pete Gillan went into a fast break with his patented "Coach, you look great, you smell great". Tulane as you may recall on the road to recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

Next the jewel of the crown and the raison d^etre of Conference USA, the Memphis Calipari Tigers and Roses Show. The Joe Biden of basketball coaches surprisingly shared the spotlight with CDR (Chris Douglas Roberts) and Robert Dozier. No, no Derrick Rose, he's just another freshman :) They also discussed about missed free throws, and Cal revealed that Dorsey missed free throw shots even during the visualization exercises ;-)

We are not done yet, the C-USA commish Britton Banowsky is up next, talking about the rebuilding of CUSA after the famous five left for the Big East and the A-10. Obviously the commish is bullish on the present and future of the conference. He also has the secret formula for conference success ("win games").

Seth Davis and Pete Gillan predict 2 NCAAs and 2 NIT bids from C-USA. Gillan's sleeper team is Tulane, while Lappas thinks 3 NCAA teams for C-USA.

Each DVD costs from $22 to $25. This includes George Mason's wins over UConn, North Carolina and Wichita State, Ammo's epic meltdown against UCLA, Villanova squeaking by Arizona, along with some women's games, including the Duke vs Maryland championship.

On some Comcast Cable systems, they are showing an unannounced preview of the NHL Network channel. You can find it on digital cable near all the other digital cable sport channels. The numbers will vary from system to system.

Tomorrow at 3pm pacific / 6pm eastern is the Conference USA Men's Basketball Media Slam (aka Media Days). The event will be covered on CSTV! Time-permitting I will be live-blogging the event - thanks to the wonders of TV technology.

Speaking of George Mason, meet their four newcomers. Will they add enough fire power to the team to give Coach L another chance at a miracle run to the Final Four?

Staying in the CAA, the CAA Hoops blog takes a team by team look at the Colonial. And if you want to warm up for the upcoming season, you can relive George Mason's magical mystery tour of the NCAA tourney with M. Litos's book Cinderella: A Season inside the Rise of Mid-Major College Basketball.

MMAS (March Madness All Season) takes a look at more than a dozen sleeper mid-major (non-BCS) teams to watch!. They also introduce their Non-BCS Top 25, to which Calipari is glued to #1 for the next 10 years (or until he goes back to the NBA?)

The Goodman Files

What was lost? Brook Lopez goes AI, while Providence's Sharrud Curry will have to sit on the bench and eat ...donuts after suffering a broken foot. This according to Goodman's repor(t). Also there we find out how Rex Walters is doing at Florida Atlantic, now that he has a Final Four player on his roster. Goodman ends the post with a look at Kirk Speraw at Central Florida.

Now this is funny, Calhoun makes fun of Boeheim's scheduling in jest. Perhaps Calhoun forgot to look up his RPI of recnet years at kenpom rpi. But not this season, UConn will be toughening up significantly, giving Hasheem Shot-Blocking Thabeet a chance to block his way to stardom.

As you may recall from last year, I proposed a new drinking game, every time Thabeet bloks a shot, you drink a shot. And by drink, I mean milk or carbonated water, or orange juice, or soy milk or Gatorade or carbonated water or iced tea or grape juice.

Goodman also points out that LaSalle's coach Giannini is feeling V-Good about transfer Vernon Goodridge.


The DeCourcy Files

DeCourcy predicts the player of the year, and his #1 choice may surprise you, but it will make Bruce Pearl happy. Four of his top ten are freshmen, with Kevin Love rated as high as #3.

On a weakend ACC.

Then DeCourcy digests out of conference schedules and suggests that tough schedules do not historically translate to March Madness success. He gives two examples from the upcoming season, Arizona is going through hell, both schedule-wise and with Kevin O'Neill ;-) On the other hand he finds Louisville's schedule to be just right.Pitino plays some strong games (Kentucky, @UNLV, potentially UNC, Purdue, BYU), but he also has six at home mid-majorathons.

Last but not least is DeCourcy's signature Inside Dish where he looks at Bud Mackey, Arizona's Jordan Hill, Florida's Marreese Speights (name is a spelling bee candidate), and Iowa State.

Wow, I managed to avoid crack and Paris Hilton references! What a show of restraint!

A Sea of Blue is counting down to Midnight Madness that ushers the Billy G era at UK!

Speaking of Midnight Madness, it doesn't look good TV wise for a national audience, so far there is nothing planned (I am intentionally ignoring ESPNU until ESPN and the cable companies (Comcast etc) stop acting like drama queens and reach a sensible carriage agreement). ESPN News may be our best chance.

The previews are streaming at March Madness All Season. Some of the latest posts include a long list of players who have the biggest shoes to fill, literally and figuratively, break out performers, goto guys, mid-major stars which includes Duke Slayer Eric Mayor and Josh Shroomvelt. That along with three point shooters, best defenders and at the rate student athletes are getting in trouble we are going to need a best offenders category :)

March to Madness reports of Izzo Madness, while the quest for the next OJ Mayo continues with EM.

It's hard not to be cynical when you see stories like these because of the way coaches abuse their power. Apparently Washington State junior Taylor Rochestie will give up his scholarship in 2008-09 so Wazoo can sign a touted Floridian recruit. Apparently his family is fine with paying what appears to be out of staet tuition ($25k per year). I'm not saying this particular case is not so, but there are so many other cases where a player makes a "decision" but if you look closely you will find the coaches Johnston's and Murphy's footprint on the player's derrier.

If you want to see how each voter voted, you have to wait 30 years for the freedom of blogger information act, or look at the spreadsheet on Google Docs.

Here is my vote, posted earlier on. So where do I disagree with the Blogger's Top 25 poll?

Clemson for one thing. After the colossal epic meltdown of gigantic proportions, I will only consider ranking them in February or March :)

Ohio State needs to be in. It's not who is gone, but who is playing and who is coaching. And oh boy, Ohio State is loaded there! Let's not forget how well Thad Matta did before, he did beat Duke in the Elite 8 when he was at Xavier but the NCAA-Zebras had a different plan.

I am not ready to consider Mississippi State a top 25 team just yet either. Yes, poor Rick Stansbury was the worse hit by highschoolers bolting for the NCAA, but what counts is results on the court. While not in the same boat as Clemson, they have to earn a top 25 ranking from me :)

Villanova is another team that is going to force its way in the top 25. Corey Fisher is going to wreak havoc, one way or the other. The four guard line-up is going to be back! Watch out!

UAB is my pet project for 2007-2008 in a more competitive on paper Conference USA, which by the way has its Media Days on Thursday October 11 on CSTV. They could be a top 25 team!

USC is certainly better than #25. OJ Mayo is a known more or less, but Devon Jefferson was a top 50 high schooler two years ago with an all star game selection. With two years of prep school seasoning, he could be a one-and-done type of player, and the Mayo/Jefferson duo could translate into a Final Four run (or selfish play?)

I could go on for ever, but eventually I have to stop. Stop!

Thad Matta and Jim Barron watch Steve Nash and the Phoenix Suns according to Goodman. But they were not the only ones, others were watching too. Meanwhile Ben Howland gets an extension through 2013 along with a salary boost. Except him to cancel their offensive plays now ;-) He also takes a look at Tulane and the head coaching opening at Texas Southern (one week before Midnight Madness).

Speaking of Ben Howland, Yahoo Sports says he goes from 1.2 million to 1.5 million and then to 2 million. Two back to back final fours, despite the slugfest and sub-par recruiting success will cure all. But now with the big recruits, what will Ben Howland do? Will he become the next John Wooden? Because certainly no one expected back to back Final Fours from his last two UCLA teams. Now everyone is expecting it with Kevin Love. Can he deliver when the spotlight and the target is on? We will know more in April 2008!

Meanwhile Majerus finds a new assistant, Paul Biancardi, formerly of Jim O'Brien State.

Dick Hoops Weiss points out that the December 4 Jimmy V Classic will feature three of the top incoming freshmen as USC, Notre Dame, Memphis and USC will participate.

Mike De Courcy makes the case that Kosta Koufos will be the offensive version of this year's Greg Oden at Ohio State. That's what DeCourcy said, not me! He apparently turned down a multi-million contract offer in Europe, so DeCourcy may not be far off on the one-and-doneness.

Bad luck for forward Mike Williams, after having to transfer out of Texas, he now has to take a medical redshirt for an injury. He will still have two years remaining, but it must be really frustrating for a player to have to sit out two years in a row.

The 2007-2008 Preview Files
As we get closer to the new season, the preview content continues to increase exponentially. So here's what we have:

An updated Top25+10 at SEC Hoops Good, Bad & Dirty.

March Madness of Season has began their comprehensive preview, discussing the fifty impact freshmen, the impact transfers (D1 and JuCo), best wing duos, best trios, best inside/out combos, and more!

The Rivals countdown continues with lofty expectations for the USC Trojans. It's not just OJ Mayo, it's Devon Jefferson that could make them a dangerous team. Jefferson was good enough to play in the spring all star games two years ago, so after two years of seasoning in prep schools, he could be an instant impact player!

DeCourcy looks at the top 10+ power forwards and goes medieval for the #1 spot. I'm not sure I agree with Earl Clark at #6 though - he has plenty of potential, but he hasn't delivered yet, unlike some of the other players DeCourcy picked below him. (Wow James Gist is still playing at Maryland? It feels like he was there 200 sweaty Gary Williams suits ago)

Meanwihle CHN's famous Top 144 preview continues with George Mason, Florida, Kansas State, Jon Stewart's Daily Show in Dayton, Georgia, Theus-less New Mexico State...

Gary Parrish reveals his top 25 point and scoring and lead and combo guards. One reader wonders why Greg Paulass is not in the top 25. I wonder whether he is in the top 250 :)

DeCourcy looks at the top smaller forwards.

We are moving to a three-column design from the current two column design. This will happen in the next few minutes, and it will take a few hours before everything is completely done. The content will remain in the main column which will become the center column, and the left column will be divided into a left and right column. For those who have blogger and are interested in doing this for your own blog, there are step by step easy to follow instructions in the Tips for new bloggers blog.

The news round-up is long overdue, and will happen either later today (perhaps a Midnight Blogging Madness?) or sometime tomorrow.

But here is a sneak peak, there is a bloggers poll brewing. That's right, a group of bloggers are voting on their top 25. This will be revealed in the next few days!

The biggest part of the conversion is over and the columns are relatively evenly balanced. There's more formatting and clean up that needs to be done, but for the msot part the three columns are here to stay!

Vitale Fan Club alert: On Mike and Mike on Wednesday at 720am ET

Hello Dick Vitale Fans, you know who you are! Dick Vitale will be making his weekly appearance on Mike and Mike on a special day this week, namely on Wednesday morning instead of his usual day, Monday morning. Vitale usually has about a 10 minute segment starting around 7:20am Eastern. Mike and Mike is on ESPN2 and also on ESPN Radio. Quite interestingly, this will air at 420am pacific time. Is Vitale sending us a secret message? :-)

And it's not at midnight anymore, it has been pushed earlier on in order to accomodate families with kids and such. Stay tuned to this blog for details on TV coverage of Midnight Madness. Usually regional FSNs and Fox College Sports show the Kentucky midnight madness, ESPNU travels around the country, ESPN2 shows highlights of the ESPNU coverage along with ESPN News, and sometimes FSN's Best Darned Not-Sports Show has some coverage as well. A couple of years ago they went to Arizona, last year they didn't do anything MM related.

And before we get started, a quick note, today's Outside the Lines (OTL) on ESPN features the Colorado Rockies and Randy Moss. Also some coverage of the tragic fatal shooting of a Memphis Tigers offensive lineman.



The Goodman Files

The best point guard of the 2007 class according Jimmy "Dog and Pony Show" Dykes is unfortunately out for the season after an injury during a pick up game according to Goodman's blog. But there's good news for Hoyas fans, Final Four coach John Thompson has agreed to a contract extension through 2013.

Goodman reports on some Weekend Madness. OJ Mayo breaks hearts and jaws at USC, while a Kelvin Sampson recruit gets busted for trafficking crack. OUCH!

Goodman agrees with me that Pargo is one of the most underrated guards. Probably because the "analysts" were too busy watching Duke or other BCS teams so they probably don't even know who he is. Goodman looks at the Zags roster and thinks they can go long and deep. There are some nice nuggets in this post, a must read: "it was difficult for him to get Morrison to defend because there wasn’t a viable alternative".

The Big Media Files

CBS Sportsline covers JT3's six year contract extension at Georgetown. The salary is not mentioned but JT3 was one of the most underpaid coaches as he was "only" making half a million a year. Sprewell couldn't feed his children for one month with that amount!

The previews keep on coming at CHN, with Bradley, Alabama, San Diego State, Maryland, Turnaround Tom, and Majerusless Utah.

Some herbs were found in Duke Crews's apartment. Apparently they were not deemed as cooking herbs, even though some people like to use them in their brownies ;-)

A Rutgers professor creates a big stir with his remarks says CBS Sportsline. Professor William C. Dowling said this among other things: "But they give it to a functional illiterate who can't read a cereal box, and then make him spend 50 hours a week on physical skills". He should hope that those big offensive linemen can't read the nametags on professors's offices, because if they can, they will find him ;-)

The Big Ten Network two week schedule. The Big Ten Network went live on August 30, 2007 with Big 10 college football action! Details at the Big Ten Network website. There you will find that 36 of their 39 college football games will be in high definition. Dave Revsine (of ESPN fame) will be the studio anchor/host, with FSN's Charles Davies and Thom (pronounced Tom, but looks fancier on papier) Brennaman doing the games.
