Today's OTL centerpiece: Nolan Richardson
If you watched last night's FIBA Americas game on ESPN2, Nolan Richardson managed to give Coach K's squad a bigger headache than anticipated. Outside the Lines has a centerpiece feature on him, with Andy Katz. Visit the OTL Page for more details and a preview. OTL airs at 3pm eastern / noon pacific on ESPN!
If you want to know what they'll be featuring each day, you can subscribe to the OTL email list. From today's email, here is a description of this promising-to-be-interesting piece:
Centerpiece: LEADER IN EXILE
As the U.S. steamrolls its opponents in the FIBA Americas Championships, Mexico has performed best in defeat, scoring 100 points and staying close for a half last night. A familiar figure, Nolan Richardson, is back on the sidelines as the pro bono coach of the Mexican national team. Richardson, who led Arkansas to three Final Four appearances and a 1994 national championship, lost his job after the 2002 season. His fiery and outspoken style, once among his biggest selling points, became viewed more as liability than asset. Having grown up in the only black family among the Mexican-American homes in El Paso, Texas, Richardson cherishes the memories and Mexican culture. Now, as Andy Katz reports, Richardson's influence on his new team is evident in its attitude and work ethic.

Great new resource: The Vance Walberg Nation
A brand new website has been created as a great basketball resource for coaches and fans of the Vance Walberg AASAA offense. The AASAA offense has created a big stir in college basketball ever since John Calipari of Memphis decided to absorb it. Here is the Vance Walberg Nation. The website has information on upcoming clinics where Coach Vance Walberg of Pepperdine will be discussing his offense. Other great resources on the website: Calipari showing AASAA plays (video), a directory of basketball coaches running the AASAA or a similar offense is being created, and more coming up every day.
Speaking of AASAA, one of these days I am going to try to go through a couple of Memphis games and see what I can reverse engineer - but I'm not trained in this so please don't expect much :)

FIBA Americas Basketball Tournament has just began! (ouch for Andy Rautins)
The FIBA Americas Basketball Tournament has just began! Coverage on NBA-TV, FSN and the ESPN family of networks. Team USA will be featured on the ESPN Family of Networks.
The Panama team features former George Washington wing JR Danilo Pinnock, former Virginia wing Gary Forbes and former Wake Forest and Skip Prosser versatile forward Jamaal Levy. Former Arkansas head coach Nolan Richardson is now coaching Mexico (used to be Panama's head coach). Uruguay features former Majerus disgrantlee Martin Osimani (he transferred to Duquesne). The first game has just gone into overtime, Uruguay just missed a last second tip-in on an out-of-bounds play!
A preliminary tv schedule for the FIBA America's games is posted in the weekly tv guide post of this blog.
Update: Syracuse guard Andy Rautins playing for his dad for Team Canada just went down with a nasty injury :( NBA-TV analyst (former Dookie) Alaa Abnelnaby said he heard it "pop" and hoped for the best. He left the court and headed to the locker room... Also playing for Team Canada is former Pitt forward Levon Kendall and UConn scorer Denham Brown. Leonardo Barbosa of the Phoenix Suns leads Team Brazil.
Update #2: Team USA was pitching a 9-0 shutout after the first media time-out against Venezuela. Isn't it nice to have Jason Kidd as a coach on the floor point guard and a scoring machine like Kobe? The other bonus of having a coach on the floor is that he overrule Coach K (and that's a good thing!) :)

Today on OTL: State of USA Basketball
Today's Outside the Lines on ESPN, at 3pm eastern / noon pacific will be looking at the State of USA Basketball. Direct link to the OTL website. Also a Video preview (broadband) of this feature. Their poll of the day is also on this topic: "Why have USA Basketball Teams recently failed in international competition?"
Here is how the OTL daily email describes the centerpiece feature on (Men's) USA Basketball:
"Once upon a time, the USA basketball team dominated the world. No other team stood a chance against the overwhelming command the Americans had on the basketball court. Times have changed though, and the rest of the world has caught up. A far cry from the original 1992 "Dream Team," the last 2 USA Olympic basketball teams have finished no better than 3rd place. Now, in an effort to regain their status in the world, the USA is assembling its team years in advance, hoping to gel and compete. Outside the Lines looks at the state of USA Basketball, and it's hope to rebound from recent disappointments.".

NCAA and Text messaging today on Outside the Lines (OTL)
Don't miss today's OTL. The centerpiece feature is on the NCAA and Text messaging. It airs at 3pm ET / noon pacific on ESPN. Two coaches will be featured: Jim Larranaga of George Mason and Jim Boeheim of Syracuse. Outside the Lines webpage
This is how the ESPN OTL email update describes it:
"Today, the NCAA's board of directors are scheduled to hear an appeal by at least 30 schools who want to overturn the ban of text messages between college coaches and recruits. Text Messaging became a popular recruiting tool in which college coaches could constantly communicate with high school prospects. This tool wasn't effectively regulated by the NCAA, until earlier this year when text messaging was banned by the NCAA. In s story that aired last year, ESPN contacted several highly-recruited high school athletes who received text messages, along with their coaches and parents. They described an atmosphere where college coaches frequently text messaged recruits during their freshman and sophomore years, a clear violation of NCAA rules. College coaches are also using text messages as a way to circumvent the rules. While college coaches are extremely limited in the number of times they can phone high school recruits, high school recruits can phone college coaches as often as they like, so many of the coaches' text messages end with, "Call me." George Mason basketball coach Jim Larranaga admits, "Every time a rule is made some bright young assistant finds a way around it." Outside the Lines examines the controversy surrounding text messaging, followed by a live discussion with Syracuse head basketball coach, Jim Boeheim."
