Daily Bubble Talk: The NIT Locks!

Let's not forget about the NIT, and more specifically the new rule that gives automatic NIT bids to the regular season conference champions. This means a maximum of 30 NIT automatic bids, but this is only a theoretical maximum since a number of regular season conference champions are already "locks" for the NCAA field. So with those out of the way, here are the teams that will get4 an automatic NIT bid, unless they make it to the NCAA, which of course is preferable :)

NIT Automatic bids
Big South: UNC Asheville
Colonial: VCU

Candidates for NIT automatic bids
America East: UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County)
Big Sky: Portland State
Big West: UCSB or Fullerton or Northridge (not sure what the tie-breaker is)
MAAC: Rider or Siena (not sure what the tie-breaker is)
MAC: Kent State
MEAC: Morgan State
MWC: BYU
NEC: Robert Morris
Patriot: American
SoCon: Davidson
Soutland: Lamar or SFA (not sure what the tie-breaker is)
SWAC: Alabama State
Summit: Aural Roberts
SunBelt: South Alabama
WCC: GoneZaga
WAC: Boise State or Utah State or Nevada or New Mexico State (not sure what the tie-breaker is)

No automatic NIT bids - Because the regular season champion is already in the NCAA field, automatic or at-large
Atlantic Sun: Belmont (automatic NCAA bid)
Atlantic 14: Xavier
ACC: UNC
Big Yeast: Georgetown
Big Eleven: Wisconsin
Big 12: Kansas/Texas
CUSA: Memphis
Horizon: Butler
Ivy: Cornell (automatic NCAA bid)
Valley of Darkness: Drake (automatic NCAA bid)
OVC: Austin Peay (automatic NCAA bid)
Pac10: UCLA Cheaters
SEC: Tennesseeeeee

The NIT lock for the WAC is Utah State, they won the four way tiebreaker.

I would have to disagree with the projection that UNC will get an at-large bid. I know the media loves to love the Tar Heels, but I am pretty confident that NC State is much more likely to receive a bid.

The Wolfpack has finished their seatson by winning 4 out of 5. UNC has won only 3 out of their last 12.

UNC (16-16) 3-12 v. top 50 RPI
NCSU (19-14) 5-5 v. top 50 RPI

This post is for the 2008 post-season NIT tournament, not the 2010.
